Fieldwork: The Heavy Absence of Sardinian Spikes
Penelope spent March and April exploring public and private archives on the coast of Sardinian cities in search of sea urchin histories. Between Alghero and Cagliari, memories of this delicacy are strong. However, the remembrance of their sweetness is fading from the taste buds of those willing to let go of a seafood on the verge of extinction. One example she found of the tensions around collecting sea urchins are documented by the Sardinian director Pietro Mereu in his 2016 "Il clan dei riccia."
